Daily fantasy sports banned in IllinoisIn the United States, indecision reigns supreme when it comes to gambling. The individual states have made several stances when it comes to gambling, both online and offline. You can travel the United States and easily have the option to enjoy sports betting, casino gaming, bingo, lottery and online poker, but will find some states still offer nothing by way of gambling.
Currently, the trend in the US seems to involve daily fantasy sports. It was a few weeks ago that the Attorney General of New York called the activity illegal gambling and ever since that time, other states have decided to look into regulating the industry. The latest to deem the activity an illegal form of gambling is the state of Illinois.
The state’s Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, decided to rule the activity illegal gambling just before Christmas arrived, leaving FanDuel and DraftKings worried about their operations. Both contested the ruling, and have since been allowed to remain in operation as the case goes to court.
Madigan stated in her ruling that she named the activity illegal gambling due to a statute of the state which says any activity involving the transfer of money or goods to the player is considered gambling, which is illegal in the state.
Both FanDuel and DraftKings have been successful in the state and are trying their hardest to continue to offer their services in the state. It seems every state is either looking into regulation of the industry or has decided to rule the activity illegal and ban the companies from operating in their area. It would not be surprising to see additional states hop on the bandwagon and decide to rule in this manner as well. For 2016, it seems that the United States has a fight for online poker, casino and daily fantasy sports to contend with.
