Detroit Lawyer and Two Businessman Charged in Betting Ring
A federal judge recently fined and sentenced three people who played a role in a sports gambling operation that spanned over several states. Attorney David Alan Stronski and businessmen John Stephen Shelly and Christopher Grodzicki were all charged for their part in the sports gambling ring. The sports gambling ring would operate in bars and restaurants across several states and the ring was taking in as high as $25,000 a week in profit. Profits came from bettors wagering on college and pro sporting events.
An investigation recently took place in Dearborn Heights in Detroit and this raid saw over $400,000 in cash and property confiscated by local law officers as well as the FBI. Barbara McQuade the U.S. Attorney in Detroit commented: “illegal gambling is big business that corrupts sports leagues and athletes. We want to put people on notice that gambling on professional and amateur sports is a crime and it will be prosecuted.”
Stronski was sentenced to two years of probation while Shelly was sentenced to one year probation. Grodzicki was also sentenced to two years probation. All three men were also ordered to pay $2,000 in fines each.
