ICC Chief Executive wants sports betting in IndiaHaroon Lorgat is the Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council in Indian and he has stated he would like to see the legalization of sports gambling in the country. Lorgat would like to see sports betting happen at the same time keeping the World Cup free of corruption.
Many in India want to see additional options for sports betting since horse racing is the only form available and there are only a few casinos in the states of India. Lorgat has been working with other people to try and convince the government of India to legalize gambling for the sport of cricket. There have been many instances of illegal gambling with the sport of cricket and Lorgat feels if it was legal this would cease.
Lorgat was quoted in The National newspaper as stating: “I agree with the notion that if it is regulated it is a lot better than if it is not regulated. We have made inquiries, and these are the things we are working towards.”
Reports have surfaced that state Mumbai is the center of illegal sports gambling which has led to $20 million worth of wagers placed. Lorgat feels that despite these figures the World Cup which India is co-hosting will be free of corruption with the
ICC anti-corruption unit working hard to see it stays free of illegal activity.
Lorgat stated two reasons he feels the event will remain corruption free. His main point was the majority of players is honest and wants to play the game as it should be played. His second reason was that the unit has measures in place to keep the event safe from corruption.
