Iowa Senators Working to Legalize Sports BettingTwo democratic senators in the state of Iowa are working to legalize sports betting in the state. The senators have introduced separate measures on Thursday to give the state Racing and Gaming Commission the ability to allow the racetracks and riverboat casinos in the state to offer sports betting options.
A law created in 1992 made sports betting illegal in all but just a few states. Senate President Jack Kibbie and Senator Steve Sodders state that current restrictions are being challenged in court. They are hoping to change the minds of members of Congress.
Both have offered slightly different versions of the same bill. Sodder’s bill mentions only professional sports while Kibbie’s bill would give Iowa gambling regulators the opportunity to offer sports betting if the federal law does not prohibit amateur and professional sports betting in the state.
“We think that we ought to be able to regulate that here (sports gambling) and have sports betting if Iowa desires to do that in our casinos,” Sodders said. “Why not let them do that betting here than in other states that are getting the revenue for that?”
