Michigan Man Accused of running sports gambling ringThis past week the Attorney General of Michigan Bill Schuette announced that an elderly gentleman of Westland has been charged with a felony for running a sports gambling ring. The allegedly ring ran over several counties and the man ran the scheme with his wife for several years.
John Zunich is the seventy year old man accused of running the gambling scheme and his wife, Ellen Jane Zunich, age 68, is also said to be involved. Zunich was under investigation after the Criminal Division was given a tip on the case from the local police department.
From late 2002 to mid-2012, Zunich reportedly took straight bets, working as a bookie. Zunich has been accused of housing college and pro football betting cards at his place of business which is ArtCraft Printing. The businessman would use the cards to distribute his gambling business in several areas including Oakland, Macomb and Wayne County.
His wife, Ellen, has been accused of working the books for the gambling operation and she would work the system to make the money appear to be income from the printing business. The couple now face several charges for their life decisions.
John Zunich now faces a charge of conducting criminal enterprises and this could give him a twenty year sentence or a $100,000 fine. Both husband and wife were charged with falsifying taxes and they face a five year sentence or a $5,000 fine. Zunich had over $733,000 in assets frozen and this was done since police believe the money was from the illegal operation.
Schuette’s announced that the profits from illegal gambling can spur related crimes and that these crimes will undermine the safety of the public. He continued to state that the division will continue to work with other officials to shut down any such operations.
