Twenty Eight people arrested in New York Sports Betting Ring BustOperating a sports betting ring in the United States is illegal, even so, there are many people in the country who take illegal bets and make a profit off of gamblers. Most times the authorities find out about illegal gambling rings and arrests are made. This is exactly what happened in New York City recently.
Officials have made twenty eight arrests in New York City recently, all of which are associated with a large sports betting ring. Police were able to make the arrests and seize $5.7 million in assets from the gambling ring.
A news conference was held just yesterday and Daniel Donovan the Staten Island District Attorney commented that the ring took in $100,000 a week when they were at the top of their game. These types of earnings took place most times during football season.
Donovan stated that the sports betting operation was running out of a strip mall and they ran two wire rooms as well. Joseph Stentella was the ringleader of the sports betting operation and customers would come to him and bet on such sports categories like mixed martial arts fighting, hockey, basketball, football and horse races.
Stentella has now been arrested and charged with enterprise corruption, money laundering and promoting gambling. He plead not guilty during his arraignment trail so he was sent to jail. Louis Diamond is Stentella’s lawyer and he has stated that he is seeking to have a bail hearing for his client. More information is set to come out in the coming weeks as officials continue to investigate this case.
